Tracheostomy Care in the Community

Upon completion, you will have an increased awareness of  tracheostomy and ventilation, including what to do in an emergency situation.

This short course is aimed at those in the community who are looking after individuals with long term tracheostomy needs and would benefit from updating their skills through theory and practical means.

Duration: 3 hrs

Participant numbers: Min 6 Max 8 

Venue: Workplace environment

Learning Objectives will cover:

•Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system

•The use of emergency equipment   

•Identify the indications for a tracheostomy tube and mechanical ventilation

•Understand risks and problems associated with a tracheostomy tube and mechanical ventilation

•The principle of how to care for a patient with a tracheostomy

•Recognise a blocked tube and/or on mechanical ventilation
